I seek to capture in my paintings the energy and the aliveness that is inherent in all things animate and inanimate. I begin my process of painting intuitively with little or no idea of what will evolve. The paintings unfold as they will to my surprise and often amusement, whether they are abstract or representational.

I am an unabashed chromatophile (lover of color). I experience deep pleasure from color and have been known to have synesthesia experiences of salivating in response to certain combinations of colors. I paint mostly with acrylics and oil sticks and I enjoy making a variety of collage papers to create mixed media pieces. The studio is my play space - a place for me to let loose, to experiment and to feel emotions of all sorts.

Making art is my personal meditation and primary spiritual practice.

Artist Statement

She works as an artist and a psychotherapist, finding that both processes share a common thread: being deeply present, connecting with the heart, and bearing witness to what unfolds.

As a young child drawing was Susan’s preferred form of communication (she loved those Venus Paradise colored pencils)! However, years of schooling pulled her away from art until, at age 25, she found her way back to it. Over the years, Susan has taken classes with various teachers, studying at the Decordova Art Museum, the New Art Center, and Newton Adult Education, where she studied with Zhanna Cantor for five years. She has also engaged in extensive online training with Nic Wilton, Louise Fletcher, and various others.

In 2012, Susan discovered Process Painting, a form of painting without concern for the end product. She found it thrilling to disregard “the eyes of the other” and engage solely in intuitive, free expression. Initially, she studied with Aviva Gold (Painting From the Source) and completed Gold's training to become a facilitator of process painting groups. She later studied with Stewart Cubley of The Painting Experience and completed his Facilitator training as well. From 2013 to 2021, she ran process painting groups, an exciting endeavor that often resulted in deeply moving moments of self-discovery and realization for participants. Today, Susan continues to paint like a process painter while also integrating her more analytical understanding of color, value, and composition.
